Food Basics Joins Porcupine Community as New Local Grocery Store
Grocer creates 50 jobs with the opening of its 142nd store

Porcupine (ON) – November 25, 2021 – Today, Food Basics officially opens the doors of its newest, and arguably the most anticipated location, in Porcupine. The newly renovated, over 18,000 square foot site, located at Porcupine Mall will be the discount banner’s 142nd store.

Customers will be able to shop for high-quality, budget friendly Irresistibles and Selection products at the new store which will also locally sourced products, fresh meat and produce.

“Food Basics is always looking to expand to new communities, and we are excited that we are continuing to grow and invest in a passionate community like Porcupine,” says John Manax, Vice President of Operations, Food Basics. “We heard the demands of the community and its need for a grocery store. Plans to open sooner were delayed with the pandemic, but like you, we are glad the wait is over. Residents who may be first-time shoppers at Food Basics will get to know us as a discount grocer that is a reliable source for fresh, always in-stock, healthy food at great prices.”

To further strengthen its commitment to the community, Food Basics will donate $2,500 to the South Porcupine Food Bank. This is in addition to the $2,500 we committed when we originally announced the store back in June. Metro Ontario was also happy to be in position to help the South Porcupine Food Bank maintain their operations so they could continue their great work serving the community after they lost their headquarters due to a fire.

In addition to supporting the South Porcupine Food Bank, Food Basics is also excited to announce a partnership with the South Porcupine Winter Carnival happening February 18 – 20, 2022. Food Basics will be a presenting sponsor of the South Porcupine Winter Carnival. Both the Porcupine and Timmins Food Basics stores will be providing all the food for the BBQ fundraiser happening at Scout Hall on Legion Drive for the duration of the carnival and the Whitney Firefighter’s Breakfast on February 12.

“The pandemic has been tough for many people and their families, which is why we are pleased to be able to create 50 jobs for the Porcupine community, provide locals with quality and affordable products, and also give back to the community we serve” said Kelly Summers, Store Manager, Food Basics. “I’m looking forward to opening our doors and welcoming everyone to our new store.”

Residents can begin to shop at the Food Basics starting on November 25 with store hours on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Food Basics is taking all the necessary steps to keep staff, customers and the entire community safe and healthy.
