METRO Wins Two Impact Awards for Sustainability and Community Service

August 15, 2024 - We are proud to announce that METRO has won two Impact Awards for our outstanding initiatives presented by Canadian Grocer, underscoring our commitment to community service and sustainability.

The first award celebrates our “Because We Care” campaign, which engaged nearly 370 employees across Ontario and Quebec. In 2023, these dedicated employees volunteered over 1,400 hours, working with our longstanding partners such as Centraide, Feed Ontario, and Second Harvest to tackle critical issues like food insecurity and access to essential resources.

The second award recognize our Animal Feed Program, which repurposes unsold food unfit for human consumption by diverting it from landfills to wildlife rescue centers and farmers as animal feed. This program not only supports a circular food system but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, lowers disposal costs, and advances our waste diversion goals. As of March 2024, 28 Metro stores in Ontario have participated, successfully diverting over 600 metric tons of food waste.
