Montreal, June 23, 2022 – The fundraising campaign conducted among customers of METRO's food banners in support of the Food Banks of Quebec raised an impressive $267,615.
The fundraiser ran from May 26 to June 12 in about 300 Metro, Super C and Adonis stores in Quebec, where the teams mobilized to invite their customers to add a $2 donation at checkout. The money collected will be used to offer food aid services to the population in each region of Quebec.
"Because food insecurity is an issue for many of our citizens, METRO is proud to put its network of food stores at the service of a cause that has been close to its heart for many years," said Marie-Claude Bacon, Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications at METRO.
"For a long time now, METRO is a generous partner of the Food Banks of Quebec, and their support takes many forms throughout the year. This latest initiative that has been added impresses me even more with its resounding success! Thank you to Metro, Super C, Adonis and their generous customers. Thanks to these donations, our network will be better able to respond to the current significant increase in the demand for food aid.” said Martin Munger, Executive Director, Food Banks of Quebec.
A long-standing partner
From a pilot project in 2014, more than 200 Metro, Super C and Adonis stores now participate in the Supermarket Recovery Program of the Food Banks of Quebec. Only in 2021, no less than 3,133,000 kilograms of food from these stores could be consumed rather than thrown away - the equivalent of 6,267,000 meals. The Supermarket Recovery Program, METRO's flagship initiative in the fight against food waste, collects and redistributes unsold but still safe-to-eat products to some 1,200 community organizations across the province.
METRO would like to thank all customers for their exceptional generosity, as well as all the employees for their engagement.
