A financial collaboration for research on the integrated analysis of marine systems
Montreal, February 17th, 2012 – As part of its Sustainable Fisheries Policy, Metro is pleased to be associated with the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) UNESCO Research Chair devoted to the integrated analysis of marine systems.
The goal of the Chair, held by Mr. Jean-Claude Brêthes, professor-researcher at l’UQAR-ISMER (Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski), is to train the next generation with respect to the study and protection of marine environments. “The Chair’s objectives reflect the commitment that Metro has made when it comes to raising awareness and providing information concerning the issues associated with sustainable fisheries. This is a concrete project that brings together all of the interveners in this area. And we are convinced that the awareness and the commitment of the decision makers must include education and scientific research”, said Marie-Claude Bacon, Senior Director, Corporate Affairs Department, Metro Inc.
The Chair calls upon specialists in the fields of oceanography and maritime resource management. “Our goal is to support, through training and research, the implementation of pertinent policies that will allow us to strengthen abilities in the analysis of marine systems and how they work, in order to enable the conservation of marine environments and the implementation of the policies that they require”, explained Mr. Brêthes. “It is also aimed at training the decision makers and representatives of civil society about the notion of sustainable development and the resulting management approach.”
Metro continues its efforts to go beyond its role of distributor and to become a player in the area of sustainable development, specifically putting forward initiatives with respect to sustainable fisheries.
