La Frissonnante greenhouse strawberries are back at Metro!

Montréal, February 4, 2016 - Strawberries in February! Winter marks the return of La Frissonnante, the unmatched winter strawberry grown in a greenhouse in Danville, in the Eastern Townships. For the third straight year, this tasty red-skinned strawberry will be available in Metro stores all over Quebec.

First produced in Drummondville in a section of Rose Drummond’s greenhouses, La Frissonnante strawberries are now grown in Danville, in a greenhouse that is five times larger: almost 3 hectares of strawberries without pesticides or fungicides will be grown from January to May.

“Metro’s commitment to buy the entire production allowed me to get a grant in 2014, which enabled our expansion project to move forward” said Joël Lalancette, Head of Production for La Frissonnante. “Our new facilities, which are not only more spacious but also more efficient and modern, will enable us to produce over 200 tonnes of strawberries between January and May. And that’s just the beginning!”

This collaboration is in keeping with Metro’s Local Purchasing Policy, of which one of the three guiding principles is to make Metro the main ally of innovative suppliers. In so doing, Metro confirms its interest in Quebec suppliers who want and who are able to continuously develop their products or their production and who show growth potential with respect to distribution. You can view Metro’s Local Purchasing Policy on Metro’s website. The 2015 Corporate Responsibility update is available at metro.ca/responsibility.
