April 25, 2012 - WHEN BAKING AND HEALTH ARE A GOOD MIX!

Metro launches a new line of Life Smart Irresistibles bakery products that focus on health and well-being

Montreal, April 25, 2012 – Metro is launching a whole new Life Smart Irresistibles line intended for people with a healthy lifestyle. The twenty or so new products, available in Metro and Metro Plus supermarkets, have been grouped together according to certain health benefits: reduced consumption of cholesterol, greater antioxidants, strengthening of the immune system and help in maintaining a healthy weight.

Inspired by the concept of functional foods, the product line developed by Metro includes many tasty ingredients: whole cereals such as wheat, oats, barley or buckwheat, linseed and sunflower seeds, as well as cranberries, raisins and blueberries. They also include polyphenols and beta-glucans, molecules which, when consumed regularly as part of a balanced diet, are known for having a beneficial effect on your health.

The range of products includes sandwich bread (whole wheat & honey, 9 grain & seeds, 12 grain with Omega 3, wholesome oatmeal, multigrain, 100% whole wheat, white with whole grains), artisan breads (pomegranate and currant, dried raisins semolina, sunflower harvest, whole clove garlic), bagels (mixed berry and oat, super blueberry, trail mix), mini bagels, (cinnamon and raisin, harvest wheat, blueberry, plain), 100% whole grain tortillas, muffins (blueberry and cranberry ) along with cookies (chocolate chunk, oatmeal raisin & walnut).

“We developed such a wide range of bakery products because more and more Quebec consumers are looking for healthy alternatives that offer an excellent quality-price ratio. These new items are now added to other Life Smart Irresistibles products that are low in fat, sugar or sodium and even gluten-free, sold at competitive prices. Promoting well-being and healthy eating habits is part of the commitment we make to our customers”, said Marie-France Gibson, Vice President, Private Brands for Metro.

Several studies do indeed show that there are still not enough people eating whole grain cereal products1 . Furthermore, Quebecers eat three times as much white bread as multigrain bread, and that gap is on the rise2. We remind everyone that whole grains are an excellent source of dietary fibre and minerals.
